For the last 8 years I have been having annual blood tests at one of the UCLH outpatient departments. Only once a phlebotomist followed infection control precautions and did not touch my skin after they cleaned it and before inserting a needle. On all other 7 occasions they would find a vein, put a tourniquet, clean my skin, get syringes, write my name on them, touch my skin again! and insert the needle into the area they just touched. Some of them even tried to convince me that this is how it should be done. Saying that it is OK because they have gloves. They did not understand that it is OK for them, but that I might acquire an infection because they touched their drawers pens, paper, chairs etc with the same glove and then touched the skin that used to be clean and insert the needle right through it. this year I had the same person as last year and he did not change his practice, although there was a display on one of the screens in the showing a note 'do not be one to pass the infection'
