"Ward was nice and recently redecorated. ..."

About: East Surrey Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

Ward was nice and recently redecorated. Plenty of chairs available for visitors.

What could be improved

1. Signage

My mum was in the Surgical Step Down Unit after major surgery, when we went to visit her there were no signs for this unit. We even asked a member of staff and they did not know where it was. I found this experience very stressful.

2. Food

The food is generally very nice but if you are a vegetarian there is very little choice. All the food is vegetable based (there are few/no meat alternative products i.e. Quorn). If you are an inpatient for any length of time this becomes boring and is also not very balanced, the only protein available is through cheese and eggs.

3. Rehabilitation

Physiotherapy in the wards is not regular. My mum needed help to get mobile and she told she would have regular physiotherapy. Most days the physiotherapist did not turn up or when they did it was at lunchtime so the session was cut short.

Anything else?

The staff are very nice and helpful, we were impressed by their knowledge.

Thank you very much for the compliments given in respect of the Surgical Step Down Unit; we will forward these to the relevant people.

However, we are concerned about the various issues that you have identified and confirm that we have forwarded your comments to the Estates & Facilities Department, as well as the Physiotherpay Services for their attention. If you would like to contact us again by post, we would be happy to discuss these issues with you further.
