"Very unpleasant senior doctor"

About: Alexandra Hospital

I took my 28 year old daughter to A&E. at about 3pm today because she has been bleeding in between her regular period for 4/5 days. The triage nurses saw her 1st and said that she was concerned about her symptoms and that she would be finding her a cubicle as soon as possible. When she was called through I thought that she was going to be sitting in another room on her own for some time and so I followed her in, the doctor was quite rude then and asked why we were there and would we not like to give him and her some privacy, to which I replied "Of course! I just didn't realise that you were actually going to see her now" And went back to the main waiting room. After a short while, my daughter came back out and said " Come on we are leaving!" When I questioned her she was reluctant to say anything and was obviously upset. Eventually she told me that the doctor had said things like "I don't know why you think you need those people here/I am a senior trauma doctor and not used to dealing with women with period trouble because they don't usually come to hospital!!" There was a long stream of derogatory comments and snipes from this man to my daughter and she was very upset. She has been losing quite a considerable amount of blood for 4/5 days, she has been in a lot of pain, she has lost weight and a locum doctored had given her some tablets to make her blood clot on fir! telling her that if the bleeding had not stopped within 48 hrs she should come back to the surgery. All of this led me to believe that my daughter could have something more serious. I am obviously delighted and very relieved that a second doctor does not believe that her blood loss is serious and we are very sorry to have wasted his time but I think the way he spoke to her and the things that he said were completely un called for and extremely rude. In every other area the experience was very good and the people were polite, caring and efficient.

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your family’s experience at the Alexandra Hospital A&E department. We were glad to hear that you and your daughter found the majority of our team supportive and caring, and very sorry that your overall experience was let down in this way. All of our staff are required to attend customer care training, and we will check to make sure our team is up to date with their training. We are taking your concerns seriously and would like to look into this incident further. It would be useful to be able to speak to you so that we can investigate fully. Please can you call us on 0300 123 1732 to discuss?
