"When an operation goes wrong"

About: Royal Derby Hospital

I recently went to ward 209 for what should have been a routine day case operation for fibroid removal. However I did have to do my own research before hand as I was given the wrong leaflet. I opted for a spinal block for the procedure so I could go home later that day. Everything was explained well, although waiting in the day room for my turn was boring and cold, I recommend magazines and/or a tv in the room to help time pass. Unfortunately during the operation the consultant perforated my womb! I have read up since that this is very rare (1-2 people in 1000 have had this problem) I was warned of the possible complications before hand but the consultant told me it never happens. I do understand that mistakes happen but the aftercare has been appalling. I was discharged with no advice of a recovery period, how to treat my stitches or what to expect. The only thing I was told was that I would no longer be able to have a natural birth but according to the consultant 'it's fashionable now for people to have cesareans' not the answer I was looking for! I have been left feeling confused and unsure about my future, I have so many questions and was never given the opportunity to ask. I wish I'd received better care.

Many thanks for taking the time to provide us with feedback of your recent experience as a patient under our Gynaecology Services. I was extrememly disappointed to hear of your plight and although our staff aim to provide the highest standard of care possible to all our patients, I am extremely sorry that on this occasion, this aim was not achieved. We would certainly like to look into these matters on your behalf and respond to you more thoroughly and therefore if you would be so kind as to consider contacting our Patient Advice & Liaison service (PALS) to provide them with more specific details about your recent visit to the Royal Derby Hospital, I am sure they would be happy to liaise with the appropriate staff and following an investigation, provide you with a more detailed response. The PALS team can be contacted Monday to Friday (excluding Bank Holidays) between the hours of 9.00 am and 5.00 pm via a freephone telephone number 0800 783 7691 or via their email address dhft.contactpals@nhs.net. We look forward to being able to assist you further as all patient feedback is important to us as this gives us the opportunity to make improvements to our services wherever we are able. Kind regards and once again, many thanks for taking the time to let us have your valuable feedback regarding this recent experience. Miss Deborah Furness, a member of the Patient Experience Team for Derby Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
