About: Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital (Wonford)

Radiology/X-Ray Outpatients Department We had to take our terminally ill relative for an outpatient CT scan - he reluctantly agreed to go as he was persuaded by his doctors that it would aid the management of his symptoms. He was very anxious to begin with and we were not at all impressed with the department or the staff. We found that: - The radiology reception is far too small with a large queue blocking the corridor and one receptionist who was not welcoming, friendly or reassuring - The waiting area is also far too small and there is no provision for patients in wheelchairs or wheeled-hospital chairs to wait - Privacy and confidentiality is non-existent in this department... - The member of staff showing us to the next waiting area was not very friendly or helpful and resisted our request to pass on important information to the radiographer in advance - The CT scan waiting area is also far to small with no space for patients in wheeled-hospital chairs. - Patients in beds and wheeled-hospital chairs left in the corridor with no privacy - Please consider that not everybody attending an outpatient scan is "walking wounded" - some people are very sick at home - the staff have the completely wrong attitude with regards to this... - Waited for 30 Minutes over our appointment time with no explanation, nobody to ask and no apology! - When finally called for scan - no greeting, no apology for going in 30 Minutes late, no introduction and the radiographer started pulling the patient away in the wheeled-hospital chair backwards without explaining what was happening or where they were going! - The Radiographer was unfriendly, dismissive and disrespectful of the family member and carer who the patient had nominated to escort them.... - the waiting area floors were very dirty for first thing on a Monday morning - obvious area had not been cleaned. - Department is far to hot with insufficient ventilation - very claustrophobic for a sick person
