"Upset by some of the staff treatment on ward A3"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

I was visiting my mother on ward A3 on Tuesday afternoon. I appreciate the support and care the staff have been providing to my mother. We are so happy with the kindness and the support the staff give to my mother and me as a family member.

However, I was disgusted with the senior matrons on the ward, they seemed to have no respect for their staff members at all. I was shocked by what I saw as the little respect the nurses seem to get for their job.

I didn't even like the way the women talked to my daughter, as she was sitting on the bed near her nan, the women walked in and told my daughter she was not allowed to sit on the bed, and should you get off.

The fact that we came to see my mother it shouldn't matter whether we are sitting on the bed. I feel they should show more respect, especially when you don’t know about my mother’s care.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your mother’s experience staying on ward A3. We have passed your kind words about the staff looking after your mother on to the team involved in her care.

We are sorry we had to ask your daughter to not sit on one of the hospital beds and if the member of staff who asked was unpleasant towards your daughter. We ask visitors not to sit on beds to prevent the spread of infection and instead provide chairs for people to use when visiting their loved ones.

We would expect all our staff to treat everyone they come into contact with during their work with the utmost respect, not only patients and their families but also fellow staff members.

We are concerned by your comment that a senior member of staff was disrespectful towards the nursing staff and have passed this on to the management team which includes the ward’s matron.
