I had a long labour with my first child in 2009 which ended up with me being transferred from the then Corbar birth centre to Stepping Hill as I failed to progress, it was an assisted birth in the delivery suite, I had an excellent experience on the whole, I had Remy-fentanyl which was great and I was in awe of the amazing job the staff at the hospital do, I had never been in hospital before in my life. I was well fed, my baby was attended to really well, I was given a room on my request and I stayed an extra night at my request. A midwife showed my husband and I how to bath our son and all was a really positive experience.
In July 2012 I went back to SHH to the birth centre to have my daughter. The triage midwife was lovely on the phone and advised me to come in. The birth centre was empty so I had lots of attention and a lovely suite with a pool and lighting with music.
I was reassured the whole time and felt well looked after. I struggled with my delivery a little as my daughter was huge (9lb15oz! ) but the midwives never faltered. After the birth I was helped to shower and shown to my bed on the small ward. I was discharged the next day and was very happy with my care again. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend SHH to anyone, both my birth experiences were positive and I really admire the job the midwives and HCAs do. Everyone was friendly and efficient.
I think people need to speak to the staff, someone mentioned they hadn't been fed - I'm sure if they had asked they would have been given food! People are not mind readers!
