"Redwood 1 - what I think"

About: adult mental health

(as the patient),

Really good IT service, really helped, meeting new patients, doing things together off the ward. Cooking, music, Wii, art activitives. Being with the OT was a more relaxing atmosphere, no pressure like with nursing staff, this helped my recovery and other people's.

Foudn out now that they've lost their rooms and half of the staff have been moved on. They have Peer Support Workers, but they've not trained to the level an OT has. I don't think the Peer Support Worker should have that kind of responsibility - too much pressure on them. Peer Support Workers should be there for the patient, not having the pressure of trying to fill an OT's job.

Response from Steven Daykin, Ward Manager , Redwood 1, Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

Hello Shan1897,

Thank you for your post regarding Redwood 1 I'm glad your experiences on the ward with activities have been a good one. Yes there has been a reorganisatoin of the OT staff at highbury hospital which was a loss to some degree to the wards but they still offer groups and 1:1 time with patients. We are actively as a ward team trying to put some activites in place from the ward staff to deliver and also we have the acquisition of two peer support workers who's time will be solely to listen and support the patients on the ward through their admission through to their discharge, be that by spending time listening to people or, taking them out to get off the ward and link back into their community visiting home and also offering advice into what may be available at the recovery college and supporting people to access this. The Peer support workers will be supported throughout and will be developing ways in improving the contact with patients, through lived experience becoming an integrated part of the Redwood 1 team. It is a new service being offered which will be challenging and in the initial period may be some challenges but the two people the ward have, both are entused and ready to offer what support they can.

I hope this gives an answer to your statement, if you would wish to discuss this further please feel free to contact me on the ward on 01159529410 and I am mor ethan happy to meet in person to discuss further.

Many thanks
