"Please help me with chronic gastroenteritis"

About: St John's Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I have had a swollen and distended stomach for more than 3 years. I can't eat anything without severe pain in my gut followed by either sickness, nausea, diarhhea or constipation. My top size has gone from size 12 to size 16/18, whereas the rest of me is unchanged. I watch everything I eat, eliminating wheat, dairy, processed food etc etc but can't pinpoint the problem. I am in pain and discomfort all the time and as a single parent and full time working mum with a good job, I am finding it very difficult to keep going.

I have had internal tests, which have shown that my upper and lower bowel is inflamed and sensitive but no treatment or help to manage this condition. I was eventually prescribed by the consultant - after 3 years and months of correspondence pleading - with tablets which have recently come on the market. They showed a minimal improvement in my condition and then it worsened so that I don't know what my bowel is going to do from hour to hour. I can't cope with this - I have no quality of life - please help me!

Dear C4T

I apologise for the delay in replying. I am sorry to hear about your discomfort. Although you have clearly attended your GP the best thing for you to do is visit your GP again and report how you are feeling. Your GP can then make a decision based on previous diagnosis and your present medical condition whether to refer you to hospital.
