"Following surgery for bowel cancer, ..."

About: West Cumberland Hospital

(as the patient),

What I liked

Following surgery for bowel cancer, I spent a week in Kirkstone Ward where I was very impressed by the care I received from all staff around the clock. Their competence was always evident, but it was their cheerfulness and positive attitude, even at 3 a.m., which really helped. Staff of all 'ranks' worked very well together and were always willing to do whatever they could to make their patients feel comfortable and reassured. During what was quite a difficult time, I could not have asked for better care.

What could be improved

A more specific time for my discharge would have been useful, once the consultant had agreed that I could leave, but I appreciate that it takes time to arrange prescriptions and any home-care necessary. There was some slight confusion over which community nurse would call to give me two follow-up injections, but this was resolved by the Cuedoc service.
