"The doctor and counselling together were my saviour"

About: Greater Manchester Six Degrees Social Enterprise (CIC)

(as the patient),

I was at work and one of my colleagues said I'm phoning the doctor for an appointment, you cant carry on like this. I had spent the last month or so crying in work and coming home feeling anxious and nervous. It had affected my family, social life and I was keeping all the stress from what was going on at work to myself becoming introvert and subdued. I broke down in the doctors surgery and finally as I describe 'got off the treadmill' and talked about my symptoms, feelings and worries. The doctor was fantastic, very calm, listened, not rushed, sat back in his chair and put his pen down, which is all I needed. I was put on the sick from work and had to go back every two weeks referred to a counsellor and put on mild anti depressants.

The doctor and counselling together were my saviour as well as support from my friends and family. Eventually after being on the sick for 4 months I have resigned from my job as my health and family is more important than any work place, but still feel sad that stress at work can have a huge impact on people's lives. If you are feeling stressed in any way, get help quick, don't put your head in the sand, take the help that's out there, go to your GP, accept counselling. Although you might have to wait, research others in similar situations and talk to people. You find out who your true friends are. Stay strong, you will get better, it just takes time.

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. We are pleased that working alongside your doctor, the support we offered was useful and appreciated.

We agree that sometime difficulties at work can be stressful. But as you rightly point out, help is available through your doctor's surgery. We will share your comments with the rest of the team. Best wishes.
