"Appalling treatment by staff! D&C day care section..."

About: St George's Hospital (Tooting) (London)

I attended the day surgery unit here last year for a D&C and can confirm that it was the most horrific experience I have ever had! The nurses showed little care or knowledge of their actual job. On arrival my husband was aggressively told to wait outside owing to the unit being female only - we had been provided with no info prior to this and he spent approx 9 hrs sat waiting with nobody able to give him any updates. The nurses who were employed to look after me and the other ladies in the unit seemed agressive, unfriendly and incompetent. The first nurse said she was in a hurry and shoved some items required for the day at me saying I would need to take a tablet later. When I came out from changing another nurse shouted at me for not wearing my gown correctly and for not wearing my shoes. She was so agressive she made me cry - clearly not the treatment you wish to receive just before surgery. I told her that nobody had explained anything to me and she just shoved past me moaning as she walked away. The other nurse also forgot to give me the tablet and only remembered when I chased just before my operation. Her excuse was "I get busy running around and just forget things!' I was also subjected to a stressful run around before my operation where a nurse took me by the arm saying they needed to ensure bloods were available for me should I need a transfusion - I found this very distressing and she was unable to fully explain why this was happening. I subsequently found out it was as my blood group is O negative but I don't see why I needed to be taken by the arm whilst she went to speak to someone about getting the blood across and frightening me about potential complications without putting anything in context! The only point of the day I can praise is how nice the Anaesthetist was and her assistants. She was very helpful and I could not fault her and her team. Thankfully I have now moved away from the hospital catchment and will never have to attend St George's again. I am sure that other sections of the hospital must be good but my experience in the D&C day care section is one that I will never forget as absolutely awful!!
