"Orthopaedic adventures in Sheffield"

Having reached the age of 40 odd without too many problems with my joints despite lifetime of hitting bats and balls as well as other sports, it was disappointing to start having different problems all at same time last year.

Firstly there were problems with AC joint in my shoulder where certain movements caused pain, most tellingly any attempt at overhead tennis shots. GP quick to identify problem and after attempt to resolve difficulties by physio, I went ahead with day operation at Claremont under the NHS. The consultation prior to surgery had been excellent, informed me of what would happen, risk levels, recovery period etc. Operation duly went ahead and was unproblematic. I experienced pain and discomfort only for short predicted period and after a month shoulder was fine, and was discharged after follow up appointment. The pain has gone, the deficiencies in my overhead now due to lack of talent rather than pain and day to day I dont have to worry about that particular range of movements.

Second episode which began shortly after my shoulder problems started began with some pain in my left knee which I mentioned to my GP. After thorough examination he asked me if I was aware of largish lump behind the knee. Not sure how I had missed it but no had not seen it. Shows how us men dont necessarily self examine like we should. GP almost certain Bakers Cyst but referred me to consultant. Consultation followed when condition fully explained and confirmed diagnosis, and better still was told what consultant was thinking about it ie dont want to jump to surgery need to know what is going on to cause it. Following MRI again careful explanation and yes there is damage to cartilage and possible start of problems but again given lack of ongoing pain, would advise against surgery at this stage. I felt involved in the process and happy to agree to carry on in knowledge that nothing serious going on but there might be difficulties in future.

So in conclusion I was very happy with my orthopaedic support from GP and hospital. I did have to wait for scans for both conditions for several months but also knew that my conditions were not as serious as others.
