"Unreasonable and impractical policies"

About: St Michael's Hospital (Hayle)

I was recently referred to the hand clinic and was scheduled a 'day case' appointment for 10.30am. I arrived early and was called into the ward waiting room where i was told i would be expected to change into a gown and wait in a small waiting room and fill in paperwork. It was then i asked how long i would be there as my wife was waiting to drive me home as i was told that someone would have to drive for me,the nurse said that i would not be seen until 4pmat the earliest as i was last on the list (and that was if things went to schedule!) I asked why i was given such an early attendance time if i wasnt being dealt with until so late in the afternoon and why i was expected to sit in a gown for 6hrs? I was told it was the doctors policy and there was paperwork to fill in. I asked to see the paperwork expecting reams off paper but there was just one or two and they were tick box style questions and answers which would take all of 5mins! I then asked the if i could go home and come back say an hour before my procedure i was told no! She took me to see the nurse in charge who proceeded to talk down to me as if i was a naughty child because of my request to go home and wait the 6hrs instead of sitting naked apart from a ill fitting gown in a very small waiting room flooded with bright sunlight and getting hotter by the second. The nurse told me it was doctors policy to operate this way but he was in the process of changing the policy to which i replied then i will come back when doctors policy is a little more 'User Friendly!' I was given more demeaning verbal by the nurse in charge to which i replied "Look i'm not going to stand here and argue with you, I think your policy in this matter is Unreasonable and impractical as i am expected to sit in a gown for 6hrs to wait on site for a 15minute procedure dealing with a very small ganglian on one finger on one hand! I left before i was forced to get more assertive with the nurse in charge who was becoming irate at my non-compliance! I am of the opinion that the policy and procedures at this hospital are at the very least unreasonable as to their expectation of patient's practical comfort and wastage of time, also impractical and inefficient to expect patient's to attend first thing in the morning when they will not be seen until last thing in the afternoon 'if' the clinic doesn't run late as they often do due to unforseen circumstances! I recommend that the clinic be split into two intake attendances according to the patient list with one intake in the morning for surgery to be performed in the a.m and another intake after lunch for surgery to be performed in the p.m. I also recommend the nurses undergo training in how to best 'serve' the patients and treat them with respect as humans with needs and rights, not as sheep to be herded, grouped and penned awaiting their like orders!
