Visited friend. Witnessed the following: - There were ants crawling over the sandwiches which had been given earlier. - My friend (female) was in a 4 bedded bay with another female. The rest of the rest of the bays and side rooms on the same corridor were occupied by male patients. The toilet and bathroom opposite the ward were designated male. After pointing this out, a sign written in biro was placed on the door of toilet (not on the adjacent shower room) to state it was for female use. Significant risk of breach of privacy and dignity. - No member of staff (including what I presume was a doctor who came in when we were there) introduced themselves to my friend or kept her informed of her plan of care. We asked a nurse if she could come to explain what was happening and what was likely to happen. She explained as best she could and promised that the nurse in charge of my friends' care would come to speak to her. This didn't happen (at least while I was present). - We asked a nurse for an additional blanket as the bay was very cold. No blanket was brought. We asked a different member of staff (?HCA) 40 minutes later who brought one. I stress that the ward was not busy - it was apparent that there were a lot of vacant beds. - The ward environment generally was poor. There were curtains which were not hung around bed spaces properly, and the standard of facilities/decor was very poor.
