"A+E"

About: Southend Hospital

I arrived at the hospital via a paramedic car after falling and damaging my foot and ankle. However, the department only x-rayed my ankle (I didn't find out for 2 days) and said it was a sprain. I returned 2 days later completely unable to so much as move my foot without pain to be told that it was just a sprain again. The doctor then revealed that my foot itself was never x-rayed (despite a huge lump on it). This was then x-rayed and then I was told that there, once again, was no fracture. It took until a week after the accident, when I attended the fracture clinic, for a doctor to diagnose me with a undisplaced fracture and give me the supportive boot that I needed. Practically that entire week was wasted in bed because even the temporary cast I was given (despite there apparently being nothing wrong) wasn't supporting my foot but more my ankle and was poorly done to the point that part of the actual bandage started unraveling and two of my toes were invisible. This was the worse of 3 or 4 appalling visits to a+e over the past year or so. What has happened to our hospital? :/

I am truly sorry that your injury was incorrectly diagnosed. We do take these cases seriously and I would urge you to, if you have not already, contact our complaints team who will investigate why this occurred. They can be contacted via e-mail at complaints@southend.nhs.uk
