"Leukaemia treatment at QMC"

Eight years ago I became ill with leukaemia and spent nearly six years as a patient of the Queen's Medical Centre. I cannot praise the treatment I received from Dr Macmillan and his staff enough. They have saved my life!

As with any illness, I needed lots of care and "hand-holding", especially late at nights. After a young Junior Doctor spent his rest-time with me talking my sleepless night away. Many of the nurses are still my friends. I learned to laugh again.

At the moment I have some Eye treatment as well. It takes time to be seen and some nurses are in too much of a hurry. I need a transport there and back home again, which can be complicated.

The QMC is not so clean any more, I am sorry to have to say that, as for years it was a shining example in my eyes.

I had been ill for 8 weeks and my weight had gone from 12 1/2 stone to a mere 8 stone. Food made me sick and nothing would make me try it. A little elderly male nurse "Lawry" made me a pasta dish, which smelled and looked great. I cleaned the plate and was not sick. Lawry made me breakfast every morning from that day on. I had a cooked dish brought to me with eggs, bacon, sausage and tomatoes (unknown to other patients). How is that for good nursing?

I had been a nurse myself 68 years ago at a University Children's Hospital.
