About: Eastbourne District General Hospital

I have Type 1 Diabetes and Ulcerative colitis so regularly visit EDGH. The level of care and support from both the diabetes team and the IBD nurse are fantastic. They are always on the end of the phone should you have questions and are friendly and informative at appointments. Neither department has ever made me feel trivial or stupid for asking questions and I feel that I have both of my conditions under control because of the care I receive at the DGH. I did have one negative experience when I needed to have a colonoscopy. I was supposed to be scheduled in for first thing in the morning, as it can be difficult to manage fasting with type 1 diabetes but was given an afternoon appointment which I wasn't able to change. The staff on the ward were all great, but the colonoscopy was the most painful thing I have ever experienced and despite asking for it to stop at one stage, the doctor just carried on, didn't speak to me, and didn't respond to a question I asked. I felt a bit ignored throughout the whole proceedure despite being fully awake. I felt a bit traumatised by the end of the proceedure. However this one negative experience weighed up against 8 - 10 good appointments I have throughout the year leaves me with an overall good experience of EDGH.

Thank you very much for expressing your appreciation of the care you regularly receive from the diabetes team and IBD nurse at Eastbourne DGH. It’s always encouraging for staff to receive positive feedback, we shall ensure your positive comments are shared with staff. As a Trust we are committed to giving the highest quality of care and we value all comments from patients and their families. On a less positive note, we are deeply concerned to hear about your negative experience when you had a colonoscopy performed and we would like an opportunity to discuss this further with you so that we can look into this matter in more detail. We would appreciate it if you could contact the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS). PALS can be contacted by phone 01323 435886, by email PALSE@esht.nhs.uk , or in person by dropping in between 9am – 4pm (Mon-Fri) to the PALS office located in the main entrance opposite the WRVS Coffee Shop.
