"Telephone contact with duty mental health worker"

About: Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust North West Boroughs Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

(as the patient),

After a very brief and poor assessment with the primary mental health care team the Open Mind service were asked to assess me.

I spoke to one of their duty workers who was excellent. She was understanding, supportive, empathic, and gave me advice about a couple of helpful contacts. I felt listened to, cared about and helped and as a result felt positive about waiting for a full one hour assessment with the secondary mental health service.

I have added further progress of my assessment to an earlier post https://www.patientopinion.org.uk/opinions/121719.

Last week I had an assessment interview with the St Helens recovery team. The assessor was caring, empathic and understanding and although the interview was not helpful it did no harm.

The service is unable to offer me support in order to help me integrate into the local community and thereby find alternative sources of support. The demand upon services in the area if high and as I am an intelligent middle class person who has had therapy in the private sector and also been a mental health worker I am not a typical mental health service user, but I find it very sad that the NHS is unable to help me.

I am very isolated within the area and have felt suicidal in the past and needed to contact the Samaritans - perhaps if I was less educated and able in many ways I might have been considered suitable for support which would have been helpful in enabling me to overcome long term depression.
