"Birth of second child"

About: St Mary's Hospital (Manchester)

I was booked in for a planned c-section one week before my due date in Nov 2013. I was a little worried prior to my appointment to discuss the delivery options as the previous doctor had made me feel that i should be having a natural birth ( i had an emergency c-section with my first son and wanted the same again). I was adamant that i wanted a section but had no need to worry as the doctor i saw did not pressure me at all and let me decide. The night before my appointment I became ill with a sickness bug but still attended the next morning. After 2 hours of pre-op and numerous checks, the doctor decided that they would not go ahead with the section as the recovery can be affected due to the spinal injections. as you can imagine, I was extremely upset. My appointmnet was changed to the following week. However, 2 hours later, after returning home,my waters broke and had to dash back to the hospital. After 4 hours of labour, my son was born naturally. Although my birth plan went completely out of the window and i had to do it naturally ( which i was terrified of), i have to say that it was probably for the best. The staff at the hospital were fantastic. All apart from one midwife. Around two hours into labour, one of the midwives came into the room and was commenting on the weather and making small talk. It was obvious that this was the umpteenth birth she'd attended that day. This is not exactly what you want to hear whilst having contractions !! However, this was just one person and the only negative in what was a completely positive experience. I saw around 5 other midwives, plus doctors, anaesthetists, etc and each one was excellent. After the birth, i was taken to a private room and spent the night there with my son. I cannot fault the hospital or the staff at all and would definitely recommend it to anyone.
