"There is no reason I should have to travel so far"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Medicine University Hospital Ayr / General Medicine

(as the patient),

I phoned the Crosshouse Hospital to cancel my appointment in March but I’m not convinced the person I spoke to appreciated or understood the point I was trying to make. Also, this appointment should have been a year ago.

I live in Girvan and have previously had appointments to see Sister Audrey Anderson at the Ayr Hospital. These appointments were fine; this nurse was perceptive to my needs and had more time than any consultants. However, the appointments all changed a year past November when I was in Ayr Hospital.

There is no reason why someone from South Ayrshire should have to travel to Crosshouse in Kilmarnock when there are perfectly good hospitals in Ayr and Girvan. I haven’t yet spoken to my GP to see if he can help in getting a more local appointment.

Dear Biker551

Thank you for taking the time to post on Patient Opinion.

I read your story with interest and in order for me to look into this further, I am going to need to know a bit more about you, so that I can ask our Health Care Manager to find why the hospital was changed and what we can do to help you.

You said you were yet to speak to your GP about the issue and I wonder if you have managed to do so yet and what the outcome was?

Can I ask you to please make contact with me by phone on 01292 513607 or by email on kate.macdonald@aapct.scot.nhs.uk?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Kind regards

Kate

Update posted by Biker551 (the patient)

I recently after received a letter with another appointment at Ayr Hospital in March to see Dr Adam and his nurse.

This appointment went very well, the doctor and his nurse were both excellent, I was very pleased.

Dear Biker551

Thank you for making contact with me by telephone this week and confirming that you have now seen Dr Adam.

You told me that you will have another appointment later on in the year and I asked if you had requested that it is at Ayr. You said that you had not done so.

I contacted our Referral Management Service to see if we could make sure that it would be at University Hospital Ayr.

I have just had another call with you to confirm that you are on Dr Adam's list for Ayr. Our Manager in the Referral Management Service told me that they will make every effort to ensure that you are seen at Ayr, however there is a pan-Ayrshire service which means that sometimes they are forced to appoint patients to other hospitals for reasons including Consultant availability in the hospital amonst others.

I encouraged you to contct our Referral Management Service if your appointment is not at Ayr, but hopefully it will be!

Kind regards
