"It is important that our healthservice does its bit to normalise HIV"

About: NHS England London

(as the patient),

I moved house and needed to register with a new GP. I have been living with HIV for 25 years and wanted specifically to find someone who is both able and willing to take me on and establish a relationship with my specialist care unit. I consulted NHS Choices to find out what my options were and used the patient feedback scores to make a shortlist. I then checked the websites of the 3 GP practices on my shortlist to get some more information. All 3 had a list of 'Long Term Conditions' on their websites and I assumed this was a list of conditions they cater for. None of them mentioned HIV.

I called the surgery that was top of my list on other criteria and asked if there was a specific reason why HIV is not listed. They were very apologetic and said I was welcome to register with them. I really feel it is important that our healthservice does its bit to normalise HIV and tackle the stigma that is still very prevalent. Putting it on the list of long term conditions in the template GP websites seems like a very easy step to take that could make a big difference.
