"Some concerns and a Suggestion for Barnsley DGH"

About: Barnsley Hospital / General surgery

(as the patient),

I was rushed to A&E in excruciating pain with a stuck gallstone a couple of weeks ago and eventually kept in for a couple of days. Overall the care was good and I am scheduled for a reasonably speedy op. Though I did have some concerns: Patronising doctor. A&E called in a surgical reg., and he came in and said "so you've got a bit of a tummy ache?" - I am not five years' old! Assistance on arrival in Ward. Up on the ward, nobody showed me the controls for my bed, or for the bed light and nurse call - it took most of the first day to figure out for myself where everything was. Lack of cleanliness. It seemed as though the ward cleaner had never been trained in how to clean - a few ineffectual swipes with cloth/mop was the best he could manage - and the ladies' loo floor was decorated with bloodstained tissues for over 24 hours. Mealtimes. It's a very long gap from dinner at 6pm-ish to breakfast at 9.30am-ish. My suggestion. It would be enormously helpful if patients were provided with a ward timetable on arrival - giving approximate times for tea-trolley visits/meals/drug rounds and consultants' rounds.
