"INR Testing"

About: Raigmore Hospital / Clinical haematology

(as the patient),

I travel abroad to South Africa most years and would very much like to buy my own tester and self test for my INR. My local surgery doesn't do this so I am then forced to seek out a surgery wherever in South Africa I may be. Then the bill comes often when I've left for another destination in Africa. So I have to guess what it might be and leave it with someone who can then go to the hospital and pay it on my behalf.

Oh for self testing...it would save a lot of trouble and make my life very much more easier. I have asked my doctor but he just says, no, we don't do that here. Invergordon is where I live. And Raigmore the nearest hospital.

I have no way of communicating with them, they seem to be unapproachable! Can it somehow be looked at? ...would very much appreciate this. Thank you.

Dear dicky dido

Thanks for getting in touch. Of course we will look into it but please accept our apologies that this has not been easy for you.

Jo Veasey the relevant manager also gets Patient Opinion alerts and has already updated the Service Manager (David Ashburn) who will be able to help.

If you can call me 01463 704722 or email me maimie.thompson@nhs.net then I can get the relevant details or put you in touch directly with David.

It would also be good to know what or who has got in the way of good communications so we can make sure we sort this for everyone. In the meantime Raigmore always as a Duty Manager on call and if you ever get stuck if you call the switchboard 01463 704000 someone senior will always be available to help you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Just by way of an update we are still liaising with dickydido to try and find a solution. There are ongoing discussions with pharmacy, GP, secondary care colleagues and others.

An interesting one which may boil down to managing risks and who decides and who should decide - professionals or patient? Seeing more and more of these sorts of scenarios.

Dear DikyDido

Thanks for getting in touch with me to update me with the outcome. Its taken us a little while to work through this and its involved many discussions with colleagues. In the end it looks like we managed to come up with a partial solution.

I am continuing conversations with colleagues to look at the wider implications and future improvements. I hope you feel it was worthwhile and that your posting was taken very seriously.

Kind regards

Maimie

Update posted by dicky dido (the patient)

Yes, I am very happy with the outcome and I thank you all very much. It wasn't the one I really wanted, but with this change of medication, at least I don't have to get tested anymore. I can now go abroad knowing I wont have to search for doctors surgeries.

Maybe this will be the way forward instead of self testing. Only time will tell.

Thanks again to the Raigmore staff for all their help especially Maimie.
