"mixed opinion of LRI"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary

Firstly I would like to make it clear that once I was taken seriously the care I received was great but it was getting to that point that proved frustrating for me. I am a healthy 30 year old male that takes regular exercise and up until my admission to hospital had never been seriously ill. When I was woken in the middle of the night by frankly terrifying chest pains I made my way to the emergency care unit and explained the problem. I sat down with a GP who from the offset was consistently beligerant, bigoted and rude. The man was clearly target driven And had no intension of taking me seriously, he told me my chest pains were muscular and got very agitated when I disagreed with his opinion. After telling me to go home I informed him that if he didn't admit me to A&E I was going to insist on a second opinion or take myself there. At this point he got visually angry, stormed off and told the porter to take me to A&E, his parting words to me were " don't blame me if you sit there all night and they tell you to go home" Bed side manner and patient apathy were clearly not high on his agenda. Once admired to A&E things changed, I was taken seriously and once I was transfered to the acute care ward I underwent scans and tests and was diagnosed with having a bilateral pulmonary embolism which is potentially life threatening. This whole episode in my life has been a catalogue of errors and oversights on behalf of the NHS as I was ignored at my GP surgery not 4 days before and was refused a blood test which could of highlighted serious problems in my bloods INR number. Again I would like to point out that it is not the staff within the LRI that I take issue with as they did all that they could for me it was at the very base level of healthcare at the GP surgery and emergency care that I have zero faith in. To anybody that disagrees with any diagnosis I advise you to keep pushing for a satisfactory answer and to insist on a second opinion.

Dear Fenlad 42, Thank you for your comments and sorry for the delay in replying. I am happy to hear you were treated appropriately in the A&E department at the Royal, and that your condition was diagnosed. However, what you describe leading up to that point is clearly concerning. Our senior A&E manager has already written to the Urgent Care Centre asking them to look into this, but it would be helpful if you could provide us with some further details - either directly to the Urgent Care Centre or via our Patient Information & Liaison Service (PILS) web page: http://www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/patients/patient-welfare/patient-information-and-liaison-service/ , or email: pils@uhl-tr.nhs.uk or free phone 08081 788337 We hope you are recovering well. I will share this with the entire A&E team as a reminder of how important it is to listen and understand our patients. Yours sincerely, Pro Mukherjee Consultant in Emergency Medicine University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
