"My daughter was admitted for surgery, ..."

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital

(as a relative),

What I liked

My daughter was admitted for surgery, and I stayed with her on children's ward for two days. Very helpful and friendly consultative staff, surgery staff and porters. Nice room and reasonably clean on ward.

What could be improved

Nursing care. Very little actual patient care. Although all checks & medication rounds were done as expected, it seems to me that nurses should also show some humanity to the people they are looking after. Very impersonal approach to sick and worried patients and parents, and a little bit sad that this part of nursing seems to have less importance these days. Great deal of nursing time spent sitting in corridor chatting - inappropriate conversations in a children's ward and easily audible from quite a distance. Not very considerate when children are supposed to sleeping or resting. At handover conversations about other patients can be heard, which is unacceptable.

Anything else?

Is it necessary to clatter around the wards at night making so much noise? Aren't patients supposed to be getting rest? Why is there not a regular round with a bottle a WD40 for the squeaky doors? They drove us both mad, and we only had to listen for two days!
