"Rude and sarcastic staff."

About: Royal Hampshire County Hospital

I went to A&E last March complaining of a flashing light and a blind spot in my vision after my optician had found nothing wrong and it had worsened. Eventually when I was seen to, the doctor checked my vision and my peripherals by waving his hands around; finding nothing wrong he dismissed me. I asked to be referred and he snapped at me in an incredibly rude and sarcastic manner saying: "What do yo expect us to do? Give you an operation or medication?" Well yeah, actually, that would have been good. I am 22 and almost a year later, during what was meant to be my final year of university, I have had 4 surgeries under general anaesthetic for a severely detached retina. Something that if it had been treated sooner, would have been much easier to deal with. It was only finally investigated properly once my vision had distorted and now I have to live with poor vision in that eye. We are only human, we all make mistakes and have bad days. However, I feel there is no excuse to talk to someone in such a rude and disgusting manner. It makes me feel sick to think this has happened to other people and probably with much worse things. When I went to the opticians after my vision had distorted the optician said it could be one of two things; either a detached retina or a tumour. I can't imagine what could have happened if it had been the latter. There are a lot of great staff in our hospitals and A&E departments. But there are also some bad ones; all I ask is for staff to treat patients with respect and dignity and to listen to them properly to prevent things like this happening to others.
