"Disgraceful treatment of an elderly patient"

About: King George Hospital

I visited a patient on Iris Ward today. There was a 93 year old lady in one of the beds. She was pressing her buzzer for at least 15 minutes and nobody came to her. She then was crying out for someone to come and help her but still nobody came. Eventually she managed to call over a reluctant nurse. The poor lady wanted someone to assist her to the toilet but she was left so long that by the time someone reached her it was too late and had to suffer the indignity of the whole ward and its visitors knowing what had happened. I am disgusted with the lack of basic care given to this elderly lady. Somebody in authority needs to find this lady and apologise for the negligence shown to her. I pray that my own elderly parents never receive such disgraceful treatment by the so called "caring profession".

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am very concerned to hear this was the case. King George is a very busy hospital, but this should never compromise our patients’ dignity. I would like to look into this further, however I will need more details from you. Please contact me through our PALS team on 01708 435 454 or email PALS@bhrhospitals.nhs.uk. Yours sincerely Flo Panel-Coates Director of Nursing
