My mother recently had an appointment for a lung examination. This was within a few weeks of her having been in hospital due to a chest infection and many checks had been carried out whilst she was there.
My mother is 90 years old, is an amputee and is also deaf. When she went in for her lung examination the nurse could not understand why my mother was not answering her questions and came out to see me. I explained about my mother’s deafness and also queried why she was having this examination so soon after her hospitalisation. The nurse was quite embarrassed and apologetic that my mother had been called in for an appointment and that she had not realised my mother was deaf.
I just think the hospital needs to make sure the appointments are actually needed and ensure they understand the patient’s overall needs and condition.
