"The optician's mother and the naughty surgeon"

About: Burnley General Hospital

My mother had her cataract surgery recently and there were complications with the surgery. As an optician we expect these sorts of things to happen frequently. On the day of surgery my complained several times that her vision was not as it should be but was told told by all involved that there is no problem. After asking my mother I found out that no major post checks were done after surgery even after complaining ie no vision checks were done, no post surgery slit lamp check etc. which was a slight concern to me. Throughout the day my mum kept on complaining that her vision was poor so I took her to my friend's optical practice the same evening where I found a capsular rupture had taken place and the vitreous was leaking out in front of the lens implant. So immediately I took her back to Ward 6 and the doctor on call who was really good confirmed my diagnosis and sensibly booked my mother back in to see the surgeon in charge of my mothers treatment. So my mother returned for the appointment a few days later but I could not attend the appointment with her with the result being that the consultant saying there was no problem at all even though 3 people had seen the problem and my mother was experiencing it. He said to my mother 'if I was to have cataract surgery I would have it done like this' and he discharged her with no followups which was shocking to say the least because most cataract patients have a 4 week week followup check so to be discharged after 4 days is just not right. After checking my mother again at work I found that the problem had reduced but not gone. Luckily there has been no damage to my mother's eye otherwise there would be solicitors involved.
