"MRI on Sunday 9th 4.45pm"

About: Wansbeck Hospital

The MRI scan I arrived for didn't happen. I was anxious when I arrived, neither the radiographer or nurse assessed how I felt or explained the scanning procedure to me, which, according to the InHealth booklet I was sent, they should do so. The room was very cold and after I pointed this out, I was asked did I want a blanket . I asked for my coat, but didn't seem to get an acknowledgement over this. The radiographer's only words were to ask me to shuffle down bed & put on ear muffs. I didn't know whether I was being left or could talk to someone. At this point I just said I couldn't go through with the scan. I left the room shaking, got my boots & bag from the locker. The nurse stated that MRI wasn't for everyone. Not at all reassuring, when given some consideration when I arrived & made to feel welcome , the situation may have been avoided. I was told that there was a bigger MRI scanner at North Tyneside. I left in shaking & in tears. Back to my GP next week.

Dear Catherine, Thank you for sharing these details with us - it is extremely important for us as an organisation to learn that we failed to provide you with the information and reassurance that you required.

I was so sorry to hear that your MRI appointment did not go well and that you left the department feeling unsupported and in distress. It is not what we'd want any of our patients to experience. I will be passing on this information to the team to ensure that they have the opportunity to reflect on what else they could have done to reassure you on arrival and enable you to proceed with the scan.

If there is any more information that you'd wish me to act upon please don't hesitate to get in touch with me directly : my email is annie.laverty@nhct.nhs.uk

Thanks again for sharing these concerns with us and enabling us to respond.

With all best wishes, Annie
