"Poor Service from Colonoscopy"

About: Fairfield General Hospital

I have put "don't know" for the department because the department I attended was not listed. The department was the endoscopy unit/day case surgery unit. Overall, I found my experience to be extremely poor. The nursing staff were for the most part good. My primary concerns were with the doctor. He very clearly wanted to perform and get my endoscopy over and done with. He rushed through the consent procedure. He oassumed I already knew the risks and complications but I did n't. He was very unwilling to answer questions. He thrust the consent form at me and told me to sign it. I asked for sedation. I do not believe it was provided. A cannula was put into a vein on my anterior forearm. Something was injected into it. However, I felt absolutely no effects at all. Afterwards I realised I had been given no sedative. I have been sedated on two previous occasions. On both of those occasions I fell asleep during the procedure and one of those was a painful one: putting a dislocated elbow back into place. I have retrograde amnesia of both events. On this occasion I felt absolutely no effect from the alleged sedative. I was fully awake during the procedure. I have total recall of it. Prior to the procedure the nurse told me that I would have to remain on the ward for at least one hour following the procedure because of the sedation. I was discharged twenty minutes after the procedure. Again, prior to the procedure I was told a responsible adult must collect me. I was allowed to go without anyone collecting me. This I feel is further evidence that I was not given sedation. Once the endoscopy was complete the consultant told me he had found nothing. I was relieved but my relief was short lived. Afterwards, on the ward, when I was given a copy of the endoscopy report he had listed a lesion he had discovered. During the procedure I asked several questions but was ignored. Prior to the procedure the nurse told me that the doctor would come on the ward afterwards and discuss anything with my partner and I. No doctor came to see me. I felt like I was just an inconvenience. I was told that nothing was found and the report I was given said otherwise. I now have to wait and worry until the end of March until my next clinic appointment. I am extremely annoyed that I asked for sedation and I am convinced I received none. I think that was to hurry up the process for them. I am not unduly surprised by my experience. The Pennine Acute Trust seems to me to be totally incapable of providing even a satisfactory level of care.
