"In patient expereince"

About: Newham General Hospital

Was vey ill on admission had not eaten or drug for over a week at home so was weak from that without the health problems admitted with. Most staff made me feel I was being lazy and attention seeking. Initially was in bed with catheter on various drips when eventually felt able to have a shower after about six days in bed still not eating so very weak asked for help to shower room was sat on a commode to be pushed there holding my own catheter bag the tubing trailing on floor which then got caught in wheel the nursing assistant tooted and moaned this was extra work. was left in a very dilapidated shower room broken and missing tiles ( which can pose an infection risk ) no one came to check on me was sitting on a plastic chair which probably had not been cleaned since previous person. Took me over hour and half to try and wash myself as had no energy and felt unwell. When drying myself I must have pulled my drip out with the towel at first felt the warm liquid and thought I had knocked the shower back on until I looked and it was like something from a horror movie there was blood spraying out onto tiles I pressed the red bell no one came in the end after pressing several times opened the bathroom door a nurse came in put something on my arm and said I needed to wash the blood off myself then left ! I had to struggle to rinse myself and dry. I was exhausted for rest of day. Heard the cleaner ask the nurse who took me back to bed ( again on a commode !) that I needed to go back and clean the shower room !! I couldn't even stand up let alone clean the shower room. After I came back to bed I heard the nursing asst who had taken me to bathroom, say I was a drama queen !! I was a very sick person who could have done with some care and compassion not a drama queen !!. I was appalled by some of the staff some of whom did not have a caring bone in their body, There were a couple of nurses who were nice but that's not enough when you are in for any length of time and they were only on duty a couple of times. Because you feel so vulnerable you are afraid to say anything while in there in case it is made even worse for you. Having degrees learning from books will never make a nurse they need to want to actually care and look after sick people and nurse them back to health. Worry and stress only delays the healing process and patients do both when being treated like they are a nuisance as become afraid to ask for help so desperately needed. Staff need retraining in caring and compassion and should remember it could be them one day that needs looking after. I was very pleased when I could go home although still weak and not feeling a 100% at least my husband cared for me.
