"No effort made to provide basic needs"

About: Helston Community Hospital

Within 4 days of my mother's arrival for supposed rehabilitation she was written off and the staff were asking for the care home to have her back; thereafter no attempt was made to nourish her or ensure she took fluids, she was left uncared for, not dressed, teeth uncleaned, hair unbrushed, nails grimy, left in bed. During her final week I had friends visiting from all over the county with supplies of drinks and food to try and keep her alive until equipment was available to enable her care home to accommodate her. Even then drinks and fruit were put out of her reach the moment the visitors had left. In response to my complaint, passed to PALS by another recipient, I know better than to write to them, I was told she would have to sign a form before any investigation could take place. Diabolical. I say my mother is dying and they want her to sign a form before they do anything. Why was she such a problem? she's 94 years old and has difficulties both understanding and communicating. But isn't that the situation with most people who require rehabilitation? Surely a young person who is compos mentis can be given a list of exercises to follow and left to get on with it? After 3 weeks in Helston the mobility she arrived with has been totally lost and she has been reduced to a skeletal shadow. Shocking and disgraceful. In a land of plenty there seems to be a deliberate policy of playing god and deciding that this one will be nourished, this one won't, sadly my mother became a 'won't. It will not be forgotten or forgiven.
