"Operation at Lister hospital"

About: Lister Hospital

I feel I must write about the appalling care I received at Lister when I had an hand op on 22nd/23 Jan. Arriving at 0700 I waited 7 hours for my Op, how can this be justified ? The one positive note was the anaesthetist who listened to the problem I had previously, his team were excellent and I awoke with no problems. Taken to ward 5 who has the most rude and abrasive nurse you could ever meet. Her rudeness was the topic of conversation when visiting time came about. I have to ask about her capabilities as well, I brought in all the medicines I needed, I asked her should I take my blood pressure tablets, her very rude response was my blood pressure was normal so I don’t have to take the tablets. Does she not know that my blood pressure was normal because of the tablets? This was confirmed by the new shift of nurses who said my blood pressure was increasing and why had I not taken my tablets. They also wanted me to take my own blood tests (I am a diabetic), have you ever tried doing this with one hand and it not being your best one These new nurses then proceeded to spend the entire shift talking in their own language, I was under the impression that English was the first choice language in the NHS. On the morning of 23rd Jan the surgeon’s assistant came in before breakfast and said to pop up and see Hand Therapy then I can go home. Hand therapy is on the 11th floor ,just before 9am, I popped up and sat there waiting, one of the therapist came out and told me to go back to the ward and have my wound redressed, went back to the ward and all the nurses were busy so I sat and waited again, the nurse finally redressed my wound and I went back to the 11th floor and sat there waiting again the therapist came out and said I would have to go back to the ward again as the dressing was not right, so back to the ward again where I sat there waiting because the nurses were busy, the nurse finally came over and attempted to change my dressing, she could not get it right, so the sister spoke to someone in hand therapy and again I was sent up to the 11th floor and again sat there waiting, finally the therapist bandaged my hand and put on the plastic splint, this was finally finished just after 12 so for over 3 hours I was given the run-around, added together that is 10 hours of my life I will not get back. I walked past the wound dressing room on six occasions and there were no long queues so why could they not dress it. I really don’t like being the piggy in the middle of a power struggle between 2 sisters of different departments. I see notices all over the hospital that rudeness and abuse to staff will not be tolerated, but it seems your staff can hide behind this and do the same to patients. I will not go on about the evening food served in the ward just to say I was shocked by what was on offer for diabetics. Finally I have been backwards and forwards to the Lister a lot and all I hear is complaints.

We're really sorry that your experience of the Lister has not been good. To date, patient feedback on our plastic surgery service has generally been excellent, but your account does not bear that out. Nursing staff are told that whatever other languages they may speak, English is the language when on duty. We're also disappointed to hear about the level of miscommunication that you experienced. We would very much wish to investigate what happened. If you are willing to help us to do this, would you mind contacting us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so that our senior nursing colleagues can follow your concerns up with you directly?
