"Poor care on medical ward"

(as a relative),

My uncle was admitted to the medical unit at Princess Royal University Hospital after being assessed in A&E.

We (my mother and I) arrived and we were planning on staying the night with him due to his learning disability and dementia. We were told by a member of staff (not one person introduced themselves) that we could not stay unless we had organised with the the ward manager. In the end, we were OK to stay because we asked if he would receive the care he needed such as changing his pad etc, and this person said they could not guarantee this as they were working with 20 patients! So of course we stayed.

My uncle was lucky that we stayed with him. Over the course of the night, we felt other patients were not being fully attended to.

I understand times are hard at the moment due to staffing levels but the staff in general I felt were rude to us and generally came across as uncaring and couldn't quite be bothered to do anything i addition to the most basic of their duties. We were asked if we wanted my uncle changed in the morning, so he would have been left in a pad for 10 hours. This is unacceptable.

I feel ashamed that part of a profession I am training in has such poor standards. It is not something I have come across and I was shocked and saddened that this is happening to vulnerable, confused older adults.

The only positive I can recall was the doctor who came to speak to us. She was the only professional who introduced themselves and informed us about everything that was going on.

Dear Cellardoor,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. I hope that your Uncle is recovering well.

I am sorry to hear about your experience at the PRUH. This is not the standard of behaviour we would expect of staff.

I am forwarding your comments to the Bromley Clinical Commissioning Group and to the Operational lead at the PRUH who I hope will contact the department and staff involved and invite them to use this feedback as a learning experience for staff.
