About: Cheltenham General Hospital

My Mum was rushed in by ambulance to Cheltenham General as there were no beds in Gloucester Royal. She lives in the Forest of Dean area so it was a long way to go to visit each day she was there (12/1 - 20/1/14) but despite the location I can say that I am so pleased she went to your hospital. On the first day I thought I was going to lose her. She is 89 and has advanced dementia and was admitted due to a bad chest infection. She was taken into the AAA ward and when I arrived the doctor gave me full information on her health and what was expected to happen while she was there. I was particularly distressed, being there alone with Mum struggling to breathe and I would like to say that a particular nurse chatted quietly to me and helped me calm down and was so kind. When I saw her again the next day after Mum had moved to the ACU she checked that I was ok and let me know how Mum had been after I went home. She was very reassuring and should be commended. In the ACU they were very friendly and took the trouble to find out more about Mum as a person so she could talk to her and her happy smile drew responses from Mum. Mum was next on the Ryeworth Ward and all the staff were friendly and caring, very calm and kind. So, although by the end of the 7 days I was exhausted from the drive to and from the hospital from the Forest, I can say it was a good experience and my Mum received the best care I could hope for on each of the wards she was on.
