"Ward 20 and Ward 8"

I arrived on Tuesday 10am into the assessment area of Ward 20 by referral from my G.P for suspected Pancreatitis. All staff on ward 20 were excellent, they were very pleasant, it did take till 7pm to get a bed on Ward 20 from the assessment area, but I fully understand that this ward is one of the busiest in the hospital so cannot grumble about that. They were fully understanding about the fact that I was very nervy of hospitals and liked to walk about to easy both my pain and irritability, they allowed me and also put in my notes for other staff that this is my wish. The following day I was moved to Ward 8 (surgical) to complete my treatment, the wards are very very clean, all I saw was cleaning after cleaning so well done for this. However there are some negatives to my stay, Although there were ample staff on night shift on ward 20, I cannot say this about ward 8, the night staff on 8 were threadbare, and by threadbare I mean 2 staff for 40 patients, with the being a surgical ward, some patients had just come back from major surgeries, some were there incase there condition worsened and required surgery, so I do think 2 nurses is not enough to provide the level of care required for the type of ward incase of medical emergencies, I suggest this is looked into. Another gripe I have regarding ward 8 is that the One hand does not know waht the Other hand is doing, it happened to me and happened to several other patients during my stay in that When the consultant was doing his ward round he would order something for a patient, be it a scan, a discharge, or even that the patient is now able to eat and drink rather than Nil By Mouth, this would either not be put into the notes or would not be conveyed to the nurses on the ward, so when a patient is asking the nurses how long until I am discharged, the nurses are saying your not being discharged or we have not been told you are being discharged, or in my case, I was Nil By Mouth, the consultant saw me around 8:30am and said i could now eat and drink, and it took until 4pm for the nurses to agree with me that i was now able to eat and drink, they had not been told, I had to beg the nurses to contact the Dr to confirm what he said so they could change the board above my bed to read ED instead of NBM. Notes must be updated at the time the Dr is doing his consultation on ward rounds. Also, I rceived an I.V injection of Buscopan, there were 2 nurses getting this ready, they were arguing in front of me about how to administer buscopan, one said Buscopan neat on its own, the other said with saline, they were arguing who was right, which left me wondering if any of them knew what they were doing, this scared me a little and I asked for them to confirm with a DR. I noticed instances like this several times on the Wednesday and Thursday.. Also, please tell nurses that when patients are asking for information regarding their care, that they have a right to the information.
