"Judgmental bullying upsetting visit"

About: Lister Hospital

I went to the lister hospital for a scan. The staff had been pre notified this was a urgent dating scan due to worry's over medication that could potentially cause harm to the baby I had been prescribed it and was unaware I was pregnant at the time. They were not planning to give me a scan that day and the appointment was going to be 26 pages of irrelevant personal information for us to trawl threw. After a call from my doctor stressing the urgency of the scan they seemed willing to carry it out. The head midwife went over the paperwork and I disclosed private details that felt uncomfortable on doing so I was made to feel like I was back at school with a playground full of bully's. ( yes exactly what comes to mind) the staff were judgemental and offensive. I said I hadn't came here for this and wanted to just leave. I left in tears but if not enough they actually followed me outside to tell me I should come back to have the scan as I wouldn't be able to have it anywhere else! I said I wasn't up for being insulted and would go private they then implied I couldn't go private as if they suddenly knew my bank balance or assumed because I'm a single mother I'm on benefits. I left terribly upset and crying. Later that day I got to see my baby I went to a private clinic in Watford and the £75 was worth every penny for their service. I can definitely say that was my first and will be my very last visit to the Bancroft maternity department at lister hospital!

We're really sorry Selena that your experience of the Lister's antenatal maternity service was neither what you wanted nor expected. We're also sorry for the upset caused. And whilst you've decided not to use the Lister's maternity service in future, we wondered Selena whether you would mind our head of midwifery making contact with you to listen to your story - at the very least you deserve an apology and also, if lessons can be learned then this will be for the benefit of future expectant mothers. If you are willing to talk with her, just email us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net and we'll take it from there. We do hope that you will give us that chance, but in the meantime Selena may we wish you well for the remainder of your pregnancy and pending birth.
