About: Kettering General Hospital

My father was referred urgently via his Optician to the Ophthalmology Casualty Clinic due to impairment/loss of sight over a short period of a few days. On arrival the Receptionists and nurses were very friendly and could see that my father of 82 years was nervous and worried about what was happening to his vision. They held him by the hand to ensure that he was steady and came back to keep us informed of what they were doing. They performed various tests before he saw the Ophthalmologist who decided he needed to have a series of blood tests and a scan performed and would see him again in about an hour when the results would be back. When we saw the Ophthalmologist again he kindly and carefully explained the diagnosis of retinal ocular occlusion and the possible causes, even directly contacting the on-call haematology registrar to discuss the possibility of a link between his blood disease and his vision problems. This resulted in a further blood test that the haematologist felt might also help in reaching a conclusion as to the diagnosis and future management of my fathers vision prognosis. I was impressed with this direct action approach to ask questions and share information while we were in the department, saving so much time and worry and addressing or dismissing potential problems without a further appointment, time wasted and less anxiety to the patient. Also beneficial for the resources of the NHS. My father knows his eyesight may not return fully but he has confidence that everything is being done quickly, efficiently and with dignity, care and respect. Carry on putting patients first and making them feel special. Thank you KGH.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your father’s treatment within our Ophthalmology Department. It is important to hear that information was shared with your father in a timely and clear manner. You stated that your father was “nervous and worried” upon arrival within the department, but am sure from your comments that both your father and yourself felt less anxious due to the care, dignity and sensitivity received from staff during his visit. The Ophthalmology Department pride themselves in delivering a professional and highly patient focused service, and your kind comments will be shared with the team involved in your father’s care.
