About: Wexham Park Hospital

I'm a 19 year old female with severe stomach pain. Although I was legally an adult my parents were very involved with my care and very concerned with the lack of care I was receiving. I was admitted through the surgical team on a Sunday evening and although there was a shortage of staff the registrar I saw was very helpful and informative. During that night I was transferred to the Christensen Ward in which the nurses were lovely for the entire time I was there. However, I was VERY disappointed with the consultant I was put under. I saw him on the Monday morning for about 2 minutes, no more than that, and he was very vague and it felt like he didn't care at all. He put me forward for a CT scan. When I went to the radiology department for the advised CT scan, the radiologist had decided they didn't want to do a CT scan on me, they did an ultrasound, which I had had done as an outpatient the previous week and came back negative both times. I think didn't see my consultant for three days, he sent junior members of his team who told me different things every day and did no more tests, I just sat there in bed for three days just being given pain killers so I wasn't in pain and quite frankly annoyed me significantly that I got in contact with my GP. My GP came in on the Thursday evening and made my consultant come and see me at which point he told me that everything his juniors had been telling me was incorrect and that I should never have been told any of this. I felt very demeaned by the way the consultant was treating me as if my case was completely unimportant to him and he had better things to do with his time and that I wasn't in any discomfort at all. He sufficiently angered me to the point that I complained to the Matron of the ward and said I no longer wanted him on my case. I had that point been there 5 days, had one ultrasound and no answers. He did come and see me on the Friday morning and he had been asked by my GP the previous evening to give my parents a call because they were very unimpressed and didn't know what was going on. When I reminded the consultant the next morning to call my parents he said they could come between 1 and 2 (they work) and if not they could call his secretary and make an appointment. That just infuriated me and my parents even more. I didn't want him near me again. My GP was very annoyed at my care by this point too and complained about the consultants behavior to his boss. Within a very short time of the complaint I had been transferred not only consultants but departments and wards as well, it felt as if I had annoyed the consultant and he just wanted to get rid of me. However, the time I spent in hospital brightens as when I was moved to Ward 20 I had more tests done, and eventually had the CT scan a week later than i should have, and within 4 days I had my answer and I was discharged. I will be making another more formal complaint because the way I was treated by the first consultant was unacceptable.
