"Basic hygiene seems to be ignored"

Recently I was on a mid afternoon visit to a patient on ward 16.

A maintenance man came into the ward.

He came to look at a bed that was not working properly. Imagine my surprise when this workman, raised the bed about 5 feet whilst an elderly woman was still in it and began working on the mechanism, banging parts of it in an attempt to get the bed to work.

I dread to think what would have happened if this bed had collapsed with the elderly patient in it and what injuries the workman would have suffered.

Call me old fashioned but I would have thought this was against all manner of health and safety issues.

Why wasn't the elderly patient moved into a different bed, the faulty one taken away by a porter or someone similar, who would at least have been reasonably clean?

I found the whole thing beyond belief.

The very next day I was again on a visit to ward 16 and the visitors to that ward were told we would have to leave as the hospital was now shut to visitors.

Given the number of workmen wandering in and out of the wards it comes as very little surprise. All around the hospital there are hand wash facilities and yet basic hygiene seems to be ignored.

I am now in the position of not being able to visit my sick wife.

I am less than impressed with the Manor Hospital.
