"Leicester royal infirmary very poor care"

About: Leicester Royal Infirmary / Accident and emergency Leicester Royal Infirmary / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a friend),

A friend was admitted to the EDU this week with a broken humerus.

She had to beg for pain relief for 8 hours before she was given anything, her lunch was put by her bed whilst she was at x-ray and on her return was told that either she ate the cold congealed meal or go without as the dinner trolly had gone back, this was despite her being a diabetic.

At breakfast toast was put on her bedside table with no one to assist her to butter it so she ate it dry.

2 days on and she was still in the ripped and bloody jumper that she wore on admission despite having a bag with all clean clothing with her. She rang her bell during the night for assistance with toileting and after 15 minutes still no answer. She struggled out of bed and made her way to the nurse's station where she was jokingly told by a nurse "we were ignoring you ". Needless to say my friend didn't find this funny.

I ask where are the 6 C's on this ward? One massive complaint coming up!

Dear Hursty,

The behaviours you describe are completely against our values as a department, and as an organisation.

Please could I ask you to urgently provide further details to EDU Matron, Paula Knowles Paula.knowes@uhl-tr.nhs.uk so we can investigate further? Alternatively, if you would prefer, you can contact the Patient Information and Liaison Service (PILS) via our website http://www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/patients/patient-welfare/patient-information-and-liaison-service/ or free phone 08081 788337

We would be concerned to hear of this kind of behaviour anywhere but even more so in our Emergency Decisions Unit. We are proud of the care we provide patients on EDU, and indeed EDU is one of the wards on UHL to receive most positive patient feedback.

Paula and I will ensure your concerns are looked into properly and hope to hear back from you (or your friend) soon.

Sincerely

Pro Mukherjee
