"I felt that the stay would have been better if I was more informed"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Cardiology

(as the patient),

Whilst my hospital stay for a very short time was okay, I felt that the stay would have been better if I was more informed of what was happening.

I was in A&E and didn't know I was going to MAU until they asked me to sit in a wheelchair.

Would it also be possible for patients to make tea during their stay in MAU. That would have been lovely.

Dear Patient

Thank you for giving us your feedback on your recent attendance at the hospital.

I'm sorry you werent kept fully informed whilst a patient in A&E, at what was obviously a worrying time for you. I will ensure your comments are shared with the A&E nurse manager, whom I know will be grateful for the feedback, and will raise this important issue with staff at the next team meeting.

With regards to your comments about the possibility of making tea whilst a patient on the Medical Assessment Unit, I will contact the ward manager and ask for her comments and return to the forum with her response. I suspect thought that there are many reasons such as Health & Safety on the ward, and also the necessity to keep patients nil by mouth whilst tests are being undertaken to assess and diagnose the patient.

Dear Patient

In response to your question about the possibility of patients making their own drinks on MAU, I duly contacted the ward manager who informed me they did look into supplying patients with tea and coffee making facilities when the enhanced recovery initiative was introduced approx 2-3 months ago on the unit. This initiative proactively promoted patients to be independent and supports this however, it was not suitable for all patients.

The ward manager advises she would hope that a hot drink is offered to patients on admission and that subsequently patients have access to a tea round 5 times per day.

I hope you have found this information useful.

Jayne
