"Knee replacement waiting times at Tameside Hospital"

About: Royal Oldham Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics Tameside General Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a staff member),

This story has been posted by Healthwatch Tameside on behalf of a member of the public who asked not to have their name published. They said…

Had to have a knee replacement and was on the waiting list for 2 years. When eventually got an appointment my op was cancelled (with no explanation) 3 times. I then had a 3-4 month wait until the next appointment. During all this time I was in a lot of pain and was conscious that being in my 80's I didn't have the time to wait. Eventually I went back to the doctors and asked to go to another hospital. I chose Oldham and got great treatment but would have preferred Tameside to make it easier for my relatives to visit. Also if you fail to attend an appointment at the hospital they cross you off the list - but that doesn't seem to apply when it's the other way round.

At Oldham I am about to have my other knee done and they have put that back by 2 weeks (due to no consultant being in) which is OK but having to wait 3 - 4 months every time it is cancelled when you are in pain is not acceptable.

Apologies that you have had a bad experience, we have shared your experience and comments with the orthopaedic manager who has described what should have happened.

Orthopaedics monitors closely all patients once they have been referred to a surgeon for a procedure/intervention.

When a cancellation occurs depending on the circumstances and reason every effort is made to reschedule.

There could be a delay of several weeks or even months depending on the reason for cancellation, availability of surgeon etc.

If we cannot get a plan in place for the patient there are occasions when it is necessary to discharge the patient back to their GP.

If you would like a more personalized and detailed explanation to your personal pathway please contact our PALs service on 922 4466 or Sarah Bradbury Business Manager for Orthopaedic & General Surgery on 922 4105 or email Sarah.Bradbury@tgh.nhs.uk

Kind regards,

John Goodenough

Director of Nursing
