"Volunteer visitors for male personality disorder service patients"

About: Rampton Hospital

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

When the male patients who experience a personality disorder were asked about what was helpful to them they stated they really valued having volunteer visitors; below are the comments made:

1. It would help for people who don’t have visits to have voluntary visits. They talk to you about general things, not why you are here. It needs to be made more so you can see it that people can have voluntary visits.

2. I also have a voluntary visitor here which I wasn’t offered at the last hospital I was at. I was told a couple of months before and it gave me time to get my head around it, it could have been quicker for me.

Thank you for your positive comments about volunteer visitors, how much you appreciate them. It is great to hear how your experiences of being able just to talk with someone about general things is really important to you.

To be able to give you a considered response about access to getting a volunteer visitor and the time it might take I will ask my colleagues who deal with this in Rampton. I will ask them to respond in the next couple of days

Thank you once again for taking the time to share your experiences.

Thank you for your positive feedback about having a volunteer visitor, I am very pleased that you appreciate the visits and that you would recommend that other patients who have little or no contact with the outside world would benefit from having one

Patients are referred to the volunteer service usually by their social worker and one of our staff then visit the patient to find out their interests to be able to match them with a volunteer with similar interests. Finding a suitable volunteer can take some time so can involve quite a wait which can be frustrating for the patient.
