"Hernia Operation and Discharge Care a Nightmare..."

I am over 80 years of age. In June 2013 the Tees Valley Treatment Centre at the One Life Centre in Middlesbrough carried out an operation that I felt went seriously wrong. My numbness required for the operation remained long after the operation and I fell when they asked me to stand up. The numbness remained into the evening and the staff made me sit at the Centre waiting for the use of my leg to return. I was still unable to walk unaided when they told me at 7pm that the building was to close. I was put in a wheelchair and my wife had to help the nurse to put me into the car. When my wife asked who would take me upstairs in our home to use the bathroom, we were told to ask the neighbour. A neighbour tried to help me into our house and up the stairs, with my wife. Predictably, when I tried to stand up, I fell. My wound opened soon after and I bled. The stitches did not hold and I also bled into the wound itself. I had rang the Centre and they only contacted me an hour later - when I was told to attend the the Centre the following morning. I suffered severe discomfort and anxiety, not knowing quite why this had happened to me. Healing took many weeks and I was housebound unable to carry out my work for a charity that I support. I did revisit the Centre and I needed to attend Accident and Emergency who dressed the wound and I had to see an NHS Surgeon. I had to remain immobile for a long time worried about movement that could cause my wound to get worse. The NHS were unable to stitch the wound but the District Nurse attended my home for over two months to dress my open wound. I now know that this was an operation carried out by a Private Hospital - Ramsay Healthcare who operate at the One Life Centre - I had thought they were a part of the NHS. No doubt the NHS paid a high price for my full recovery and the private company have given me little more that excuses and an apology for the way I was discharged.

I am really very sorry that your experience of Tees Valley Treatment Centre did not meet our usual high standards. The Centre has treated over 20,000 patients since it was commissioned by the NHS in 2007 and our clinical outcomes, as monitored by NHS Commissioners and the Care Quality Commission, are consistently excellent with 96.3% of patients surveyed in 2013 satisfied with their overall care and 99.1% likely to recommend to family and friends. However we acknowledge that your experience should not have happened and that it was very much the exception to our usual practice. We have made changes to ensure this situation cannot happen again. I am aware that your formal complaint is ongoing and I hope that we can reach a solution that is to your satisfaction soon.
