I was referred via my GP by my optician to see the ophthalmologist in June. It was 18 weeks (apparently the norm) before my appointment and the consultant to whom I was referred was not available and I saw another who confirmed the diagnosis of dry macular degeneration but suggested that I saw the optician for a possible aid to my reading problem. I then had to wait until 19th December for a further appointment. I do not know the name of the person whom I saw but obviously it`s on my records. I had a sight test and was told that the prescription of my present specs was incorrect and that my optician would be obliged to rectify this. Today I collected the remade specs. They are absolutely hopeless. I cannot see to read or watch television & computer and distance is not great either. My optician confirmed that the new lenses were made to the prescription given to me. Both he & I are now very unhappy. I can`t see and he has had to go to the expense of the cost of new lenses. Fortunately I have been able to find some very old glasses which will have to constantly be changed to accomodate whatever it is that I`m doing. I will also have to go to the expense of having new glasses abroad because there is insufficient time to remake again before I have to leave for an extended time for work. This optician also told me that a did not have cataracts while two opticians today confirmed that I do have this condition albeit in the early stages. There is, of course , not much that you can do for me but I do suggest that you check the credentials of some of your staff although I`m sure that you will tell me that nothing like this has happened before. Actually the entire eye clinic is run in an entirely shambolic way and no way would I or any of my family attend in future. For many years I ran an extremely large and busy NH dental surgery and have been horrified at the inept and costly way this department is run. I have, unfortunately, witnessed other dreadful failings in other departments but it is up to those who suffered or their families to complain.
