About: Southport & Formby District General Hospital

On chemotherapy and temperature rose to 38 degrees on 19th December 2013. Rang Clatterbridge Oncology who told me to go to Southport A&E to have bloods taken and they would contact them to tell them I was going.. This I did. I have a picc line as veins are weak. The first doctor I saw took bloods from the line and then cleaned and flushed it as per protocol. Waited for results of blood tests. The doctor must have gone off duty as after about 1-2 hours waiting he wasn't there. A sister said she would give me the medication I needed through the picc line but it was a while since she had done one. I told her to forget it. A little while later she came back and said there was a nurse on 10A who was used to dealing with these lines and would I be happy to go up there so she could sort me out. I said yes. On getting to ward 10A it appeared that there was no such nurse, and a doctor came to me and stated that he didn't want to use the picc as it would entail culturing, whatever that would be. He also said he was the best on the floor at putting candulars in. This he was not. He couldn't get it into my hand, and informed me that my veins were bursters. I did tell him about my veins. It really hurt and I still have a sore hand. Also I was on the ward with other ladies. This was at a time my white blood count was low and was susceptible to infection. I had the picc line to save me the ordeal of anyone trying to get a candular in. Surely there is more than one person at Southport who can manage them. All of my District Nurses can. Not happy with Southport Hospital.
