"Miscarriage - my struggle for treatment"

About: Birmingham Women's Hospital / Maternity care City Hospital / Maternity care Sandwell General Hospital / Gynaecology Sandwell General Hospital / Maternity care Sandwell PCT

(as the patient),

I was 7 weeks pregnant, when on Friday evening, i started bleeding @ 2000 hrs. I went to Sandwell A&E, where i was seen and told to go home and rest as this may be normal.

The following day i started bleeding more heavily and phoned NHS Direct who booked me in to see an out of hours doctor at my local primecare centre, which for me was at Neptune health centre, again i was told to go home and rest and to go and see my GP am on Monday.

On the Monday, i went to see my own GP who tried to get an appt for me at one of my local Early Pregnancy Units, i was advised by my GP that they would ring me direct.

After waiting a further hour and still bleeding, Sandwell called me to state they would not be able to see until the Friday. Then City hospital contacted me to say they do not have an appt until the following evening! As you can imagine i had now been bleeding for 4 days, not to mention the stress and anguish caused by all of this to me and my family. At this point, i referred myself to the Womens Hospital in Bham, there i was told i should go back to Sandwell or City Hospital. After explaining and completely breaking down! i was eventually told i could be seen there, but would have to wait 3 hours.

However, thankfully i was seen earlier and after a scan unfortunately told that i had miscarried and this probably happened on Saturday. Although i cannot fault the treatment i received at the Womens hospital, i cannot believe any women should have to go thru all this at just a stressful time anyway!! Please, please, if you are a doctor or nurse, help women in this position to obtain the treatment they need sooner rather than later. At this time, i feel maybe i should have done more on Fri/Sat to help convince the staff i need some more care or help. Just maybe my baby would have survived, or should i have demanded more, would someone have listened to me sooner then?
